Deep Tech takes centre stage at the Spherik Accelerator in Cluj-Napoca

Spherik Accelerator, in collaboration with Cluj Startups, organised the Trends and Trendsetters in Deep Tech, Entrepreneurship and Policies event. The future tendencies in technology and their possible effects on the private and public sector, as well as on society, were the central themes.

The initiative is part of the Startup Europe Week campaign, the largest multi-event for start-ups, at its third edition this year (March 5-9) – it includes over 300 events carried out in over 50 countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. The main purpose of this campaign is to bring together political decision makers and representatives of local and central authorities, entrepreneurs and business people, with the purpose of identifying ways of collaboration in order to harness potential in innovation.

Emil Boc, the Mayor of Cluj-Napoca, Oana Bizgan, deputy in the Romanian Parliament and Bogdan Ceobanu, Policy Officer in the innovation and startups unit of the European Commission, debated the main challenges faced both at a national and local level, for an inclusive and sustainable development. They launched a partnership invitation towards the representatives of the business environment, technology and research to capitalise Romania’s potential in innovation. In line with the latest trends, Mayor Boc announced the launch of the first virtual public servant, Antonia.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, robotics, blockchain and quantum computing – deep tech technologies will affect all industries, and through their potential of catalysing change and redefining the way to approach issues will open up new opportunities for business and development.

These were the themes approached by the members of the second panel: Radu Ionicioiu – Senior Researcher at the National Research and Development Institute for Physics and Nuclear Energy; Horia Hulubei (IFIN – HH) and Director of the Romaninan Quantum Network; Dan Calinescu – CEO at Fluid Trends (Open Source Blockchain Tech Education Platform); Cosmin Curticapean – CEO at iFactor (peer-to-peer lending platform for SMEs), Adela Muresan – Big Data Developer at VE Interactive and Mircea Vadan – Founder of Cluj Startups.

The discussions were moderated by Diana Rusu, Executive Director of Spherik Accelerator and Paul Brie, Director at R&D Evozon. Starting from the role of Startup Ambassador in Romania granted last year by the European Commission – DG Connect to the Spherik Accelerator, the event had the purpose of engage Romania in the pan-European discussion about the digital economy at the EU level – Digital Europe – Building a Pan-European Ecosystem for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
