Bucharest prepares for the Night of Museums

The eighth edition of the Night of the Museums in Bucharest will see nocturnal visitors entertained and informed with both regular and special exhibitions, concerts, dance, theatre, movies and interactive events. BR presents a selection of highlights from this year’s line-up.

National Museum of Art of Romania (NMAR)

Address: 49-53 Calea Victoriei

Visiting hours: 18.00-04.30

This year’s theme for Night of the Museums at the NMAR is the “significant detail”. Visitors will have the chance to discover in the museum’s galleries and courtyard that art is in the details.

National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC)

Address: 2-4 Strada Izvor, Parliament Palace, E4 Wing (entrance from Calea 13 Septembrie)

The museum hosts the RE: MADE collection, a version of which was presented at Centre Pompidou as part of Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin/Madrid in 2010. The collection consists of eight installations – video, multimedia and net art – around notions of re-reading and reinterpretation. These are eight distinct responses which bring out the geography of media and their deep interpolation in our daily lives. The selected works move, divert and reinterpret pre-existing visual and digital material to reflect upon contemporary visual culture and our representations.

The event will also feature a ShortsUp movie presentation in front of MNAC and a documentary program, Turn off the Lights.

Bellu Museum

The Souls’ Garden of the barron Bellu proudly invites the general public to a special night out celebrating 100 years since two great Romanian personalities have found their eternal rest in the “sleeping” town: the architect Ion Mincu and the great playwright Ion Luca Caragiale. The open-air central exhibition will display representative works by these two personalities.
This year, the monuments in focus will be those dedicated to Mincu and Caragiale, as well as those to other writers and artists and Mincu’s other masterpieces.

Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History

The Grigore Antipa National Museum of Natural History is using the occasion of the Night of Museums to invite the public to visit its recently updated permanent exhibition.

National Museum of Maps and Old Books

Address: 39 Strada London

Visiting hours: 20.00-01.00

The Night of Museums program will have as a main point of interest the exhibition: 1877 – a glorious moment in Romanian history.

George Enescu National Museum

Address: Cantacuzino Palace, 141 Calea Victoriei

Visiting hours: 20.00-05.00

George Enescu National Museum awaits its visitors with a program of world and Romanian traditional music, orchestral, choral and chamber, sung by students of the Dinu Lipatti National College of Arts and others.

Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum

Address: 28-30 Kiseleff

Visiting hours: 9.00-14.00

The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum has adapted the Night of the Museums concept into the Morning of the Museum. The program is interactive and starts with a photo exhibition on the theme of Open_Closed: The objects and their story. There will also be a classic-jazz unplugged concert in the barn with Romanian folk music, shadow theatre, craft fair and organic food.

After 14:00, the museum will transform into a different place, celebrating Irish Day, with visitors invited to assist in an Irish dance show.
