Omer Tetik has been appointed general director of Banca Transilvania (BT), the third largest bank in the country based on assets. He is the former head of Credit Europe Bank Romania. Tetik’s main objective at the helm of BT is to increase its market share by 2-3 percentage points to about 10 percent.

His appointment comes after some 15 months of the position remaining vacant following the resignation of Robert Rekkers in January 2012 after nine years with the bank. Tetik, who has over 17 years of professional experience in banking, will report directly to the president of BT’s board of directors, Horia Ciorcila.

Tetik began his career in 1996 at Finansbank in Istanbul as treasury dealer. He was later appointed executive treasury manager at Finansbank Moscow and president of Finans Securities in Bucharest. While at Credit Europe Bank he worked as executive manager and later vice-president of the treasury division. Other positions he held while there include vice-president for retail banking and first vice-president until he was promoted to CEO in 2010.

Aged 40, BT’s new head is a Turkish-born Romanian citizen. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara and speaks four languages, including Romanian.

Banca Transilvania was set up in 1994 in Cluj-Napoca by a group of local entrepreneurs. In 2011 it became the largest bank in Romania based on assets and it currently has a market share of about 8 percent.
