ADP green building brings the award for the most sustainable building in Central and Eastern Europe to Romania

The most sustainable project implemented in Central and Eastern Europe in 2020 is located in Romania. ADP green building won the “Regional Award – Central and Eastern Europe” for the PENNY Otopeni project at the BREEAM Awards 2021 competition.

PENNY Otopeni, for which ADP green building provided BREEAM consulting and certification services, was designated the most sustainable project in Central and Eastern Europe on Thursday, March 25th, 2021 at the BREEAM Awards, an annual event that marks the most significant achievements in sustainable building design, development and management of the buildings.

Of the 196 BREEAM certified projects in Romania, over time only 7 buildings received the Outstanding level, this being the highest level of certification. PENNY Otopeni was the first in the world to obtain the Outstanding level using the latest version of the BREEAM New Construction standard, with a score of 95.24%. This rating is still the highest ever obtained on this version of the standard. In order to achieve it, ADP green building has ensured that the PENNY Otopeni store meets all the requirements of the BREEAM standard, since the beginning of the design phase.

“PENNY Otopeni is one of the most sustainable stores in the world, where all the recommendations of the BREEAM have been tested. It is a concept store, but also an experiment. We received full support from the REWE Romania team to implement all BREEAM requirements, to test solutions and technologies and to observe them over time. PENNY Otopeni has significantly reduced CO2 emissions, electricity and water consumption, but also focused on stimulating biodiversity and facilities for people with disabilities.

• The store consumed 18% less energy than a standard PENNY store in 2020.
• The roof has 120 photovoltaic panels, 55 solar tubes, 1,000 square meters of green roof and HVAC equipment.
• The photovoltaic panels produced 55,315 kWh in 2020, reducing the energy consumption by 21% and avoiding the production of 74,550 kg of CO2 emissions.
• Solar tubes bring natural and diffuse light in the store, avoiding high contrasts and protecting food products from direct contact with solar radiation. This also reduces the electricity consumption for lighting.
• The store is the first one in the PENNY network to test and use natural refrigerant R744 (CO2), based on carbon dioxide, with a global warming potential of almost zero, eliminating the risk of pollution with refrigerants commonly used for cooling equipment.
• Customers’ thermal comfort has been increased with the introduction of refrigerating display cases with doors, which also reduced the energy consumption by 12%.
• The green roof, trees and shrubs, climbing plants on the side facades, birdhouses and insect habitats, they all contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.
• The parking lot is equipped with electric car chargers and bicycle racks. A large rainwater retention tank is situated below, harvesting rainwater, which is then reused for toilets and irrigation.
• The store is perfectly accessible to people with locomotor disabilities, and the markings for people with visual impairments lead visitors from the sidewalk of the 23 August street to the entrance of the store.

Along with the PENNY store in Otopeni, another 130 green projects in Romania are influenced by ADP green building, thus contributing to a healthier, safer, less polluting and better integrated environment, whether built or natural.
