68.8 pct of Romanian households have internet connection in 2017

A total of 65.5 percent of Romanian households have a computer and 68.8 percent of them have an internet connection, data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) shows.

According to the INS, there is a gap between households in urban and rural areas when it comes to the ownership of computers. The data released shows that 75.9 percent households in urban areas have a computer, while 51.9 percent of households in rural areas have a computer.

There are no major differences between regions. On average, 50 to 70 percent of households in all regions have computers, except for Bucharest -Ilfov, (82.6 pct), West (73.2 pct), and North-West (72 percent). The smallest shares were recorded in North-East (57.8 percent) and South Walachia (58.6 pct).

In 2017, 72.5 percent of those aged 16 and 74 used a computer at least once.

People in urban areas use computers more, and overall, men use computers more than women. Specifically, 73.8 percent of men use computers, compared to 71.3 percent of men. Most of  those aged 16-34, namely 91.5 percent, use computers, while inly44.8 percent of those aged between 55 and 74 have used computers during the period surveyed.

Compared to last year, in 2017 68.8 percent of Romanian households have access to internet, up to 3.6 percent year-on-year.
