The value of tax payments by card doubled to EUR 15.8 million (RON 69.4 million) in the first 11 months of 2011 versus the similar period of 2010, reveals data from Romanian banks that are members of Visa Europe.

Around 204,000 transactions have been made for paying local taxes by card and the average value of a paid tax increased by 13 percent y/y to EUR 75 (RON 340) by end-November 2011.

Visa cardholders can pay taxes by card at POS installed at the desks of tax administration offices in 145 municipalities and online for 36 cities.

“We noticed that the online card payments segment was by far the most dynamic, as the number and value of the transactions increased more than seven times. We hope the number of town halls accepting the online tax payment by card, without a fee, will increase significantly, as this possibility allows of avoiding the long lines at desks and enables citizens to pay anytime, from wherever they may be, in the country or abroad,” says Catalin Cretu, general manager Romania, Visa Europe.

Visa Europe launched, for the third year in a row, a campaign to promote card usage for paying local taxes. The campaign will take place between January and March, including traditional and online promotional activities. Visa will offer 1,500 prizes consisting of tax reimbursements up to a limit of EUR 57 (RON 250) to people paying their taxes by Visa card.
