President Klaus Iohannis points out that Romania has “major unfulfillments” on the absorption of EU funds, adding that he will make a statement on this matter soon.

He says that it looks as if letters are made but the issues are not solved. Earlier this week, The EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu has sent a letter to the Transport Ministry in which she expresses worry regarding the slow development pace of projects backed by EU money.

“I want Romania to attract EU funds, because they are necessary for our development,” said Iohannis. The president added that Romania’s absorption of EU funds has to be analyzed considered the negotiations for the future EU budget.

Romania has received EUR 1.5 billion worth of funding from the EU in the first quarter of 2018, under the 2014-2020 framework, according to data from the Ministry of EU Funds. In the period 2014-2018, the country got EUR 10.2 billion on the same framework.
