Counterfeiting of national currency up 120 percent in 2011, still at minimum risk

According to the last Annual Report of the National Bank of Romania, 5,707 national banknotes have been counterfeit by non-professionals, using handicraft on basic paper. Although this percentage has more than doubled since 2010, only 3.95 out of one million banknotes are counterfeit and counterfeiting is not seen as a high risk.

The banknote with the highest number of fake copies recorded was the RON 100 one (with 3,111 duplications), followed by 1,913 copies of the RON 10 banknote. Most of these fakes were discovered by the National Bank of Romania when credit institutions deposited their cash.

As far as the euro currency is concerned, 3,744 false banknotes were found in Romania, 15.5 percent more than in 2010.
