Starting December 22, the opening of the 2023 edition of the Balea Lac Ice Hotel will take place. In its 17th year, the construction already has the first igloos ready to welcome guests, despite delays due to unusually high temperatures.

The delay in construction this year is attributed by organizers to the unusually high temperatures, despite the hotel being located at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. The hotel is built from bricks of ice and snow mixed with water. Temperatures must be below minus 5 degrees Celsius for this mixture to freeze, allowing the hotel to withstand the test of time. Due to the high temperatures in recent weeks, workers have only now been able to start their work.

Located in the Sibiu county, ice blocks from Balea Lake, known as the largest glacial lake in the Fagaras Mountains range, are used in the construction of the Ice Hotel. Reservations can be made here.

The theme of this year’s hotel is “Art and Ice,” featuring sculptures of significant personalities who had a special relationship with art.

The “Art and Ice” edition will initially have 20 rooms, a restaurant, and a bar, all connected by a series of hallways. Each room will have the name of a significant personality who has had an important impact or a marked relationship with the world of art.

There will be 10 rooms named after female personalities and 10 after male celebrities, ranging from Queen Maria of Romania to Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain. Other female personalities promoted through the hotel’s names include Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Corina Chiriac, Cecilia Cutescu-Stork, Haricleea Hartulari-Darclee, Angela Similea, and Marlene Dietrich.

Andy Warhol at Balea Lac Ice Hotel

There will also be a room named after Andy Warhol, along with a book launch event for “Warhol after Warhol,” written by Richard Dorment, recently launched in London and New York.

Historic Cafes Route goes to Balea Lac Ice Hotel

Another room will bear the name of Dracula, the character from Bram Stoker believed to be inspired by Transylvania. This will be linked to the launch of the “Cultural Routes Winter Experience in Romania by Historic Cafes Route,” the first tourist product of the Historic Cafes Route destined for the Balea Lac Ice Hotel in Romania, implementing the goals established at the international forum organized for the 48 accredited cultural routes by the Council of Europe in 2019 in Sibiu.
