Kiwi.com: Romanians spend one day, on average, in cities across the country

The festival season has Romanians traveling all across the country in search of great summer experiences. Kiwi.com, a leading travel-tech company, shares information about where and how Romanians have flown inside their own country so far this year.

By July 20th, Romanians had already booked 86% of internal flights booked for the whole of 2022 on Kiwi.com*. According to the company’s data, there is a growing interest in traveling across the country, as in 2022, the number of bookings was double that of 2021.

Most of them are traveling to and from the capital city, as the most transited routes so far are Cluj-Napoca to Bucharest and return, Timișoara to Bucharest and return, followed by Suceava to Bucharest, and Iași to Bucharest. The top 5 destination cities are Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Iași, Suceava, and Oradea.

The top nationalities traveling inside the country (apart from Romanians, who are, of course, a vast majority) are the French, US citizens, Israelis, Greeks, Moroccans, Italians, Syrians, Germans, and Tunisians.

People who booked return tickets for internal travels in Romania through Kiwi.com spent, on average, 1.06 days at their destination, so it is possible that most of them travel for work purposes. 81% spend up to 3 days on their trip, 13% between 4 and 6 days, while 5% will return after 1 to 2 weeks.

A third of those traveling inside Romania booked their tickets up to 3 days before departure, 20% with 3 weeks and up to 2 months in advance, 17% one to two weeks before departure, 13% 4 to 6 days in advance, while another 12% booked 2 to 3 weeks before flying out. The average price they paid for tickets is 105 euros.

It is plausible that most of these trips are related to work, as the average length of stay would suggest traveling with a particular purpose in mind for a day trip, and not so much a city-break. According to a survey conducted by STEM/MARK on behalf of Kiwi.com**22.6% of Romanians say their employers offer hybrid work.

Moreover, when asked about mixing traveling and work, 49.6% of Romanians said that exploring new places releases stress and makes them happier at their job, and has a positive reflection on their work, while 31.7% said that traveling opens new perspectives and serves as inspiration for new ideas.

According to the same survey, 17.1% of Romanians said that their job requires traveling abroad for work twice per year, while for 9.6% this happens once per trimester or quarter, whereas 4% travel internationally for work once a month.

*Data for 2023 refers to bookings made on Kiwi.com by July 20th for internal flights in Romania. Data for previous years refers to bookings made for the entire year.

**The data was collected between October 14th and October 24th 2022, within a study completed by STEM/MARK for Kiwi.com. The target group is formed by people aged 18 – 59, who have been at least twice on holiday abroad in the past 6 years, from Romania (n=1010), Czech Republic (n=1012), Slovakia (n=1008), Hungary (n=1014), Poland (n=1010). The used method is Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI).
