The National Chamber Choir “Madrigal – Marin Constantin,” conducted by Anna Ungureanu, will perform the Extraordinary Show “On the Road of Christmas” at the National Theatre in Bucharest on December 19th and 20th at 7:00 PM. The special guests of the event are Ofelia Popii and Marius Turdeanu, two of the most known actors in Romania.

Built around the significance of Christmas as a new beginning, the show proposes a universal parable about the resilience of a family facing the trials of destiny, as well as the miracle of faith and love.

For nearly 90 minutes, the Madrigal Choir, along with the guest actors and children from the Cantus Mundi choirs, invites the audience to (re)discover the profound symbolism of Christmas through music, poetry, literature, scenography, theatrical art, stage movement, and light design. All elements of the show create an organic connection on stage between drama and hope, between classical and modern, and between traditional Romanian carols and international ones.

The direction and script of the extraordinary show “On the Road of Christmas” are signed by Emil Pantelimon, and the scenography is by Vladimir Turturica. The selection of dramatic texts is curated by Mădălin Guruianu and takes the audience through a dynamic emotional sequence, ranging from “The Song of Songs” to poems by Eugen Jebeleanu, Lucian Blaga, and Costache Ioanid, as well as texts by Khaled Hosseini, Saint Teresa of Avila, and Paulo Coelho.

For over half a century, events organized by the Madrigal Choir around Christmas have been one of the longest-running and consistent cultural traditions in Romania. Every December, the Madrigal Choir connects with Romanians, heralding the celebration of the Lord’s Nativity on the grand stages and in sacred spaces in Bucharest and throughout the country.

The extraordinary shows “On the Road of Christmas” are part of the MADRIGAL 60 anniversary program, which takes place throughout the year 2023. The program marks 60 years of uninterrupted activity, excellence in music, and cultural diplomacy for the Madrigal Choir, which has become a symbol of national artistic constancy and the cultural and image relevance of Romania in the world.

The International Human Solidarity Day

On the occasion of the International Human Solidarity Day, celebrated on December 20th worldwide, the children from the Cantus Mundi choirs embark on a caroling journey, asking the world for a Christmas truce—a break from hatred, a pause from egos, a halt to wars—just as soldiers in conflict situations have historically sought a respite for peace.

On December 19th and 20th, children from the Cantus Mundi choirs will carol through Bucharest, from commercial spaces to newsrooms, from communities supporting the elderly to those supporting children. Their carols and message of peace will be amplified by every person who stops and listens.

The Christmas Truce is a campaign by the children of Cantus Mundi, the most extensive national program of social integration through music for children in Romania. The National Cantus Mundi Program, initiated by conductor Ion Marin in 2011 and currently carried out by the National Chamber Choir “Madrigal – Marin Constantin,” brings together over 1,800 choirs and more than 63,000 children from Romania and the diaspora.
