Painting by Romanian Toniza sells for EUR 170,000

Romanian painter Nicolae Toniza’s painting “Three brothers (The painter’s children)”, dating from 1920 – 1922, sold for EUR 170,000 at yesterday’s fourth spring art auction organized by Artmark in partnership with Erste Private Banking. The sale sum places the art piece in the top ten most important sales on the local art market. It is the second Tonitza painting that has made it into the top ten, which is dominated by works of Nicolae Grigorescu.

The fourth spring auction recorded total sales of EUR 1.28 million and an acquisition rate of 91 percent. Over 207 works were up for grabs in the auction. The second highest value paid in the auction was for the paining “Nude from the back”, which sold for EUR 77,500, while the third highest sum paid was EUR 52,500 for the painting “Oxen driven carts in the sunset” by Nicolae Grigorescu.
