Romania has two exciting national holidays coming up: Children’s Day and Pentecost. These back-to-back celebrations are eagerly awaited by both young and old, as they provide a wonderful opportunity to honor children and rejoice in the spirit of togetherness.

Children’s Day, celebrated on June 1st, holds a special place in the hearts of Romanians. It is a day dedicated to cherishing and appreciating the innocence, joy, and boundless potential of children. Children and parents alike can take part in various fun activities, performances, and games to make this day truly memorable. Nestlé Romania’s 1uniFEST, Festivalul Opera Copiilor, and Art Safari Kids are just some of the delightful ways you can commemorate the day in Bucharest.

For young football fans, “Children’s Day at the Football Museum” is the project that the Football Museum in Bucharest will organize on June 1st. Each adult gets free access for 3 children under 14 years old in the adventure of discovering the ”treasures” of the Museum in Gabroveni 24, Old Centre, where super fun, games, and ideal gifts from the Museum’s Fan Shop are waiting for them!

Another football-related activity for kids will be organized by FC Rapid Bucharest at the Giulesti Stadium. The club’s eSports team will host a FIFA23 competition dedicated to middle and high school students in Romania. It will take place on June 1, with access open from 10:30 and the actual tournament start at 11:30.

Also starting on June 1, Karpatia Pony Show 2023 is set to bring five days of fun for the whole family. Between June 1-5, the Cantacuzino Estate in Floresti will once again welcome nature and beauty lovers, equestrian sports enthusiasts with interactive activities for all family members. Those attending the event will have the opportunity to watch dynamic equestrian competitions, games, horses and pony performances or enjoy numerous outdoor activities.

But Children’s Day is also a reason for parents to surprise the little ones with gifts. A recent study by Reveal Marketing Research reports that 5 out 10 children receive gifts on this joyous day. Most parents tend to buy gifts for their children occasionally, once every few months (43%), or quite frequently, several times a month (36%). The study also identified the occasions on which children usually receive gifts. The most commonly mentioned events were birthdays (83%), annual holidays such as Christmas, Easter, etc. (73%), and Children’s Day – June 1st (49%). It is worth noting that, on Children’s Day, teenagers between 16-18 years old receive significantly fewer gifts (36%).

Soon after the jubilant celebrations of Children’s Day, Romania embraces the festive spirit of Pentecost. This holiday, also known as Rusalii, is observed on the seventh Sunday after Easter and commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. It is a time of spiritual reflection and rejoicing, marked by religious processions, church services, and cultural events. Families gather to share meals, exchange blessings, and enjoy the company of loved ones.

And since these two holidays are so close to each other, with just one working day in between, most Romanians have opted for an extended weekend. According to a LinkedIn survey by Undelucram.ro, one of the leading employee community networks in Central and Eastern Europe, 57% of Romanians plan on taking June 2 off, 21% will only enjoy June 1 off, while 16% of them are working on both days.

Another survey by BestJobs states that the majority of respondents will not work during the period of June 1-5 or are already on leave from the beginning of this week, and many of those who remain active expect June 2 to be a light day. Only 12% mentioned that they will work throughout this period, including on the legally designated days off on June 1 and 5. Among those who have taken leave, almost half prefer to stay in the city, planning activities outside their homes, with many of them trying to avoid crowds and spend time with their children, family, and friends. Another 20% say they will spend time outside the city they live in.

“The combination of these legal holidays has given many Romanian employees the chance to take extra time for relaxation and recharging, especially after a busy start to the year for most of them. Additionally, for parents, this mini-vacation is the perfect opportunity to invest in their relationship with their children, with June 1 managing to fulfill its purpose. Some companies have also provided extra benefits, an additional reason for joy for employees before the start of the summer season,” says Ana Vișian, Marketing Manager at BestJobs.
