#BRExclusive. On your Xmas List: premium wine boxes with Andrei Popa (Dor de vin / Anika Restaurant)

For this Christmas, Business Review has started a list of Romanian entrepreneurs and businesses offering Christmas packages and gifts. For those interested in some premium wine boxes, Business Review talked with sommelier Andrei Popa, founder of Dor de vin and co-founder of Anika Restaurant.

How do you describe your work to someone who doesn’t know anything about your offers?

Skipping to the good part, Dor de Vin is a monthly subscription for carefully curated Romanian wines, selected by myself, as a sommelier, and delivered to the door. The novelty is that the content of our wine boxes is a mystery. Why a mystery wine box? The anticipation of the new wine discovery brings even more joy than spoiling it all by revealing the contend before delivery. It is just the psychology of happiness mixed with some wine.

You get 4 bottles once a month. Each bottle comes with tasting notes, pairing tips, a Chef created a recipe to pair, and the story behind the bottle and the producer. The subscription is flexible and can be paused or closed whenever the customer wishes, without any restrictions or costs.

The wines from any of the subscription plans are high-quality HORECA wines that have a wow factor. Most of them are not available at standard stores and hypermarkets – and almost every month we surprise our subscribers with special limited editions of wines, market premieres, and even wines that are not yet launched on the market. So, our customers are often spoiled with being first to taste some top Romanian wines. Most subscribers find they have never tried most of our selected labels and say that the majority of the wines get to the favorite wines’ personal list.

Imagine, just in one year, being Dor de Vin subscriber, you will discover and sip on at least 48 peculiar Romanian wines, will learn how to taste them, and improve your wine knowledge. All this without spending hours in the wine stores, overwhelmed by the number of brands and labels.

Why choose a tailor-made present (or curated selection) for Christmas? Why yours?

Wine never goes out of style and it is one of those gifts that can match the occasion. Whether it’s a birthday party, an anniversary, dinner parties, or a Christmas gift, there is sure to be a wine to tone with and complement the occasion.

The wine world can be overwhelming, that is why it is a good idea to leave it to the specialist and choose curated selections. For Dor de Vin Christmas Edition Gift Boxes, we mixed a selection of Romanian wines at a set value, but, if you are looking for particular wine types or vintages, or some high-end selection, we can tailor the wine box and customize it. We really love to create personalized experiences.

This kind of gift is a great way to show how well you know the person you made the gift for, and how much you care.

Why give the gift of Romanian wine to Romanians? It is a great idea because many people take considerable pride in their heritage, but know little about Romanian wine. Therefore, this is an amazing way to help them discover and be more connected to their roots.

How did you prepare for this festive period? Do you expect increased sales?

Besides our subscription gift vouchers and a curated selection of Gift Boxes, for this holiday season, we prepared Christmas Edition Gift Boxes with a selection of Romanian wines, artisanal cozonaci (traditional Romanian sweet bread), and gourmet jams from Naramza, a small artisanal Romanian producer that makes really surprising confiture.

We do expect a natural increase in sales in this gift season.

What’s the most important lesson you have learned by creating your product?

Having just 9 months of delivering Romanian wine with Dor de Vin, our lessons are still to be learned.
