One year after winning the silver medal at the Concours Mondiale de Bruxelles 2022, “Primul” (“The First”), a blend of Fetească Neagră, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, wins another silver medal at the DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2023. After this second international recognition, “Primul” red 2019 edition becomes one of the few Romanian wines awarded by the two prestigious competitions, thus proudly contributing to putting Romania on the world wine map.

Assembled by Marina Samoilă together with the winemaker of Gîrboiu winery in Vrancea County, the “Primul” red 2019 edition sold out in December 2022, less than a year after its release. The wine, for which 6,000 bottles were produced, is the first premium private label created by the Desprevin Media team and the first blend of the “Primul” itinerant wine collection.

June 2023 also marks the launch of the next editions of “Primul“: the red 2020 edition produced at Balla Geza near Arad, the rosé edition produced in Averești, Huși, and the white edition produced for the first time at Valea Ascunsă near Bistrița. The new wines of the “Primul” range have already been included in a presale campaign available until June 26 on the desprevin.ro and winedeals.ro platforms, and will also be introduced in a limited and carefully selected series of HORECA locations starting this July.

I had so much confidence in the first wine that Marina created at Crama Gîrboiu, that we decided to send samples to the Concours Mondiale de Bruxelles 2022, where “Primul” red 2019 gained a silver medal, despite the fact that it had been bottled less than six months before the competition. It was the only private label that received a medal. This year, knowing the potential of this wine, we entered the DWWA 2023 where, once again, it received the appreciation of experts, being one of the top-rated 10 Romanian wines in the competition. The wines in the “Primul” family are an expression of the passion and dedication that Marina Samoila and I have for Romanian wine and wineries. And even though I am fiercely competitive and always appreciate a medal, we did not create these wines for awards but for consumers, keeping in mind how their preferences are developing, their desire to experience well-made blends, and the level of respect that Romanian wine is starting to gain in our country” says Alex Dona, Chief Drinking Officer of Desprevin Media.

Now in its 20th edition, the DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2023 (DWWA) has established itself as the largest and most prestigious wine competition in the world. The competition is globally respected for its rigorous judging process and world-class judges, and the DWWA results enjoy international trust from both professionals and consumers.

Primul is an itinerant wine, meaning it will be made every year at the winery that impresses us the most, a wine always based on the same values: always different, always a blend, always original, and always made to please both connoisseurs and regular consumers. Every time I work on the final blend for <> wines, I feel extremely anxious. I wonder if people will like it, if they will ask for a second bottle, if the sensations I feel throughout this process will be transmitted further, and if, in the end, that balance I seek will be appreciated. This new medal adds value to a product that captures the beauty of Romanian wine and validates the choice made by customersaffirms Marina Samoilă, wine charmer with WSET Diploma, co-founder & CEO of Desprevin Media.

In addition to the “Primul” concept, Desprevin Media also launched two other mid-level private label wine ranges produced at Domeniile Averești in 2022: “Nea Florică” – a joyful wine for the new, reinterpreted rural area, available as a dry red wine and a off-dry white wine, and “Festival Wines” – Headliner – dry red, Opening Act – dry rosé, Rehearsal – off-dry white. The private label range has contributed to doubling Desprevin Media’s turnover in the past two years and will be an important component in the company’s goal of reaching a turnover of 15 million RON by 2025.
