The national Deposit Return System (DRS) is entering a new development phase as RetuRO, the company responsible for managing DRS in Romania, signed the equipment acquisition agreement with Anker Andersen A/S, a market leader in high-performance counting and sorting systems, offering a diverse range of products for markets and countries that have implemented a national Deposit Return System.

During the initial phase, The Deposit Return System will run with 17 centers nationwide, where RetuRO will transport beverage packaging collected from over 80,000 retailers, count, and sort them for resale to recycling companies. RetuRO operates on a not-for-profit basis, meaning that the company’s profits will be reinvested exclusively in the operation and development of The Deposit Return System.

The first wave of equipment is expected to arrive in late September, according to the assumed supplier’s terms. Anker Andersen A/S will provide RetuRO with 20 counting machines for this phase, capable of sorting around 6,500 units per hour. These machines will handle glass, PET, and aluminum containers while identifying and rejecting items outside the DRS scope. As the scheme expands to 17 sites, the company will directly supply 94 of these counting machines and oversee the manufacturing and distribution of all other necessary equipment for comprehensive scheme functionality.

“Our needs are quite specific when it comes to equipment and the set-up of the counting and sorting centers. And precisely in this regard, efficiency and speed have been our way of doing things. Finding a capable and experienced partner who can provide not only the necessary state-of-the-art equipment but also ensure on-site installation and testing, specialized training, maintenance, service, and the provision of spare parts, has been an important step for us. This comprehensive and customized approach to services offered by Anker Andersen A/S in the implementation of Deposit Return Systems worldwide played a significant role in choosing the technical partner for Romania, said Gemma Webb, CEO of RetuRO.

Anker Andersen A/S has extensive experience in developing high-performance industrial installations for counting and sorting returnable packaging, producing equipment either at their Danish factory or in collaboration with international partners. The Danish company has installed over 400 such fast systems in countries around the world. Their global network of experts, suppliers, and organizations they collaborate with is ready to complement technical expertise with advice and guidance on organizing an efficient Deposit Return System. Based on these foundations, Anker Andersen A/S has been chosen as the supplier for all Romanian DRS regional counting and sorting centers.

As we unite with RetuRO to pioneer a new approach to the Deposit Refund Scheme (DRS), we take pride in being part of Romania’s most extensive circular economy initiative. Anker Andersen A/S is excited to contribute our technical prowess to the establishment of the first regional beverage packaging counting and sorting centers. This collaboration not only echoes our commitment to environmental responsibility but also symbolizes our shared dedication to shaping a sustainable future for generations to come, stated Anders Topp Daugaard, CEO of Anker Andersen A/S.

The use of high-performance industrial installations from Anker Andersen A/S, capable of scanning and sorting over 300 beverage containers per minute, contributes to recycling billions of packaging units and reducing thousands of tons of CO2 annually for the benefit of the environment and future generations.
