Nestlé and Kaufland Romania are strengthening their commitment to the environment by expanding the NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® coffee capsule collection network nationwide. By installing 52 new points in Kaufland stores, the total number of available locations has reached over 70, thus tripling the existing infrastructure.

Launched in December 2022, this initiative facilitates the recycling of used capsules and helps reduce environmental impact. The collected capsules are taken over by Verdum, a specialist local partner, which sorts and processes them to separate coffee grounds, plastic and aluminium. Coffee is turned into biogas or compost, and plastic and aluminium are recycled and reintroduced into the production circuit.

Nestlé makes constant efforts to create new packaging designed from the ground up to be recycled, as well as in terms of developing the recycling infrastructure. Thus, we encourage NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto consumers to use the recycling infrastructure and return used capsules to one of the available locations. We are committed to making our packaging 100% recyclable or reusable and reducing the use of new plastics by a third. This means using more recycled materials and creating more reusable packaging“, explained Irina Siminenco, Corporate Affairs Manager, Nestlé Romania.

In Kaufland stores, we encourage responsible behaviour towards the environment, and the partnership with Nestlé allows us to make it even easier to collect from our customers. In addition to coffee capsules, they can also bring used batteries, used light bulbs and neon lights, paper/cardboard, foil, empty bottles from cosmetic and cleaning products or even small WEEE to be recycled. This extensive collection network, the third largest nationally within our stores, is part of Kaufland’s long-term strategy regarding pollution limitation“, said Valer Hancaș, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, Kaufland Romania.

Over the past decade, Nestlé has been working to make coffee farming techniques more sustainable around the globe through the NESCAFÉ Plan. Building on these efforts, Nestlé launched the NESCAFÉ 2030 Plan in which it defined its sustainability vision for the next decade – to help coffee farmers transition to regenerative farming practices and, in doing so, aim to reduce gas emissions greenhouse effect and improving farmers’ livelihoods.

Also, Kaufland Romania promotes and simplifies recycling among customers, each store being equipped with multiple separate waste collection facilities. In the financial year 2023, more than 38,000,000 plastic, glass and metal packaging were collected with the help of collection machines in stores. In addition, another 650,000 plastic containers from cosmetics and hygiene products were deposited in the Frog available in the area at the entrance to the stores, with customers being rewarded with discount vouchers for shopping.

The list of Kaufland stores where NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® coffee capsules can be collected can be accessed on the company’s website.

More details about the collection and recycling process are available at dolce-gusto.ro/recycling.
