Between December 13, 2023, and May 12, 2024, ARCUB presents the most extensive exhibition of original works by the famous artist Salvador Dalí in Bucharest. The exhibition-event “The Universe of Salvador Dalí” is organized by the City Hall of Bucharest, through ARCUB – the Cultural Center of Bucharest Municipality, in partnership with HADRAN Events, and presents 170 works – sculptures, graphics, engravings, lithographs, miniatures in gold, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and glass, as well as surrealistic furniture illustrating the genius of the extravagant Salvador Dalí.

The exhibited objects are part of the most significant private collection containing works signed by Salvador Dalí, owned by the renowned art collector Beniamino Levi. Beniamino Levi personally knew the artist in the 1960s and commissioned a series of bronze sculptures inspired by the most famous motifs and themes from the surrealist imagination. As a result of his close relationship with the surrealist master, with Beniamino Levi serving as his agent, the private collection “The Universe of Dalí” has immeasurable value and includes the most original works of the famous Spanish artist in Europe.

“My art is a reflection, one of the many reflections of what I accomplish, write, think.” – Salvador Dalí

The exhibition “The Universe of Salvador Dalí” at ARCUB represents a unique opportunity for the Romanian public to explore the versatility and surrealist imagination of the famous Catalan artist through a selection of original creations covering various artistic mediums, from graphics, miniatures in gold, rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and glass to furniture design.

The “Universe of Salvador Dalí” exhibition

Among the most well-known exhibits that can be admired for five months at ARCUB – Hanul Gabroveni, there will be also sculptures in bronze and encrusted with precious stones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires), such as “The Dance of Time” – the famous melted clocks, an unmistakable hallmark of Dalí’s creation, elephants with oversized legs, “The Dalinian Dancer,” whose rhythms pay homage to Dalí’s flamenco and his native regions, “Space Venus,” one of the central pieces of the exhibition illustrating three of Dalí’s favorite motifs: the clock, ants, and the egg, “Alice in Wonderland,” Dalí’s favorite character to represent the gateway to the realm of dreams, and “Woman with a Head of Roses,” a symbol of pure feminine beauty and ethereal youth.

“The Universe of Salvador Dalí” at ARCUB also includes glass sculptures created in collaboration with the renowned Daum crystal workshop in France, a material that, for Dalí, represented an ideal medium for “the expression of metamorphosis,” or his surrealist perception of reality. Sculptures like “Venus with Drawers” and “The Chippendale Rhinoceros” capture the essence of liquid, soft matter and its mysterious transformation into a solid material. The gold miniatures on display reveal Dalí’s inspiration from the jewelry of Louis XIV’s court, even imitating his coins. The exhibition also reveals Salvador Dalí as an illustrator, with explorations on themes that emphasize fantasy, dreams, and distorted elements, as well as classic literary themes found in “Much Ado About Shakespeare.” Among the exhibits that will encompass the entire exhibition space at ARCUB – Hanul Gabroveni is the famous sofa in the shape of Mae West’s lips, reminiscent of Salvador Dalí’s versatility and his unique way of translating his sources of inspiration into art.

Illustrating the variety of themes and symbols that form the distinct universe of Salvador Dalí’s creations, from elephants, rhinoceroses, fluid clocks defying the hardness of matter to butterflies, angels, femininity, and sexuality, the exhibition provides an overview of the various stages of Dalí’s career, highlighting his influences and experiments, as well as his evolution as an artist.

The event organized by ARCUB offers visitors the chance to get lost in the captivating universe of Salvador Dalí, where reality and dreams intertwine, a unique opportunity to journey into the world of a genius and experience a variety of artistic forms that define his unmistakable footprint.

“The Universe of Salvador Dalí” exhibition also offers the audience the opportunity to explore Salvador Dalí’s works through virtual reality. The VR experience will allow visitors to discover hidden details of the Spanish artist’s creations in a new dimension and transform their visit into an interactive journey into the surrealistic imagination of Salvador Dalí.
