The Museum of Abandonment, an online museum dedicated to exploring the history of child abandonment and institutionalization in Romania, unveils an exhibition at Bucharest’s Amzei Square for one month, up until September 7, 2023.

The Museum of Abandonment, Romania’s first exclusively digital museum, inaugurates a multi-dimensional project in the exhibition space of the Creative Quarter at 13 Amzei Street. This project explores the phenomenon of child abandonment in Romania through various dimensions: from physical museum displays to virtual ones, from live museum activities to a dedicated video space for testimonies from the Sighet Hospital Home.

“The Museum of Abandonment is the voice of the children who have been silent for decades behind the walls of child protection institutions. In order for this voice to be heard, someone has to listen to it. We have managed to bring to the center of Bucharest, to Amzei Square, a subject that has been hidden on the periphery of our collective consciousness for decades,” explains Simina Bădică, historian and co-founder of the Museum of Abandonment.

“Unboxing the Museum of Abandonment – Live Museum” is the name of an exhibition-laboratory that presents to the public a part of the digital museum’s research activities, as well as a partial physical translation of the Sighet – Hospital Home exhibition. The Museum of Abandonment will present at the Amzei 13 space the following: the archiving laboratory, the virtual reality project Sighet Hospital Home, the physical exhibition with the same theme, and four MA-branded conferences that will revolve around various areas of work: particularities of a digital museum with a social theme, the abandonment archive, the museum’s research directions for 2023 and 2024, and connections with the MA community.

The project takes place from August 10th to September 7th, from Wednesday to Sunday, between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM, with free admission. More info about this museum is available in English language here.
