At the exhibition “Romania – 100 artists, 100 years of creation”, George Şerban’s collection is inaugurated in the Art Gallery of the Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni. Starting on June 9, 2023, visitors will be able to admire numerous works of painting, etching, and sculpture created by 100 renowned Romanian artists over the course of a century, between 1900 and 2000.

“It was for me, as an art collector, a great joy and an opportunity to put on display and present to the public more than 100 works of drawing, watercolor, lithography, etching, and mixed media, made by Romanian artists throughout the 20th century. The exhibition and its catalog were structured into two periods: 1900-1950 and 1950-2000. A special chapter is dedicated to the artists who form the “Kazar School”. I have in my collection several hundred works made by the artists of this school, I had countless meetings and discussions with many of them and I was convinced that starting from their common denominator, Professor Vasile Kazar, and from the respect that his former students bear him, we can talk about a real Romanian school of graphics, the <>”, said lawyer George Şerban, owner of the art collection.

The artistic project “Romania – 100 artists, 100 years of creation” presents numerous works created through different techniques by renowned Romanian artists, such as Constantin Brâncuși, Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Aman, Octavian Smigelschi, Samuel Mutzner, Ștefan Câlția, Victor Brauner, Horia Bernea. A section of the exhibition is dedicated to Romanian graphic art representatives from the period 1900-2000, such as Vasile Kazar, Ion State, Mircia Dumitrescu, Johanna Kovacs, Nicolae Săftoiu, Harry Guttman.

“Come to the Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni to uncover another kind of a 20th century, narrated with the help of the paint brush and artistic mastery. In an extremely rare fashion for today’s Romania, the exhibition and George Şerban’s collection combines various artistic currents specific to the century of extremes: academism, symbolism, avant-garde, art nouveau, modernism etc. From charcoal drawing to ink, from watercolor to graphics and lithography, from painting to sculpture, the exhibition presents art enthusiasts with works created over the course of a century. The works illustrate diverse and representative themes for the Romanian art of the time: landscapes, still life, portraits, but also avant-garde works. All in order to highlight the Romanian artistic genius, the continuous approach between traditionalism and innovation, each artist leaving their own mark on the way of interpreting the theme, colour or light. In its entirety, the exhibition constitutes an important event for the restitution of some of theRomanian artists, but also for the promotion of those from the last half of the 20th century”, said PhD. Alexandru Constantin Chituță, curator and interim manager of the Brukenthal National Museum.

The exhibition “Romania – 100 artists, 100 years of creation” will be open to the public from June 9 to August 9, 2023. More details are available online. Tickets can be purchased directly at the entrance of the castle and access to the gallery is only possible through guided tours. For group bookings, a phone call to the number (+40) 244320520 is required.
