Interpol director Meng Hongwei was reported missing by his wife and the French police opened an investigation. Meng’s wife, who lives in Lyon where Interpol is based, contacted the police after not hearing from her husband since he travelled to China on September 29.
The 64 years old Meng Hongwei is the former vice-minister of Public Security in China and it was elected president of Interpol in November 2016. His mandate is ending in 2020.
Different rights groups expressed concern at the time of his election to Interpol that Beijing might try to use his position to go after dissidents abroad.
So far, Interpol has not answered any questions by media regarding Meng’s disappearance.
