Dorna installs 5 cleaning devices for collecting waste in 5 important Romanian rivers

Dorna, the first natural mineral water in Romania available in rPET – packaging made of 100% recycled PET, announces the results of the “Water that takes care of waters” campaign. In 2022, cleaning systems for collecting waste transported by river waters were installed on five of Romania’s most important rivers.

The cleaning campaign, initiated in partnership with the National Administration „Romanian Waters” and developed with the support of the non-governmental organization CSR Nest, was carried out in two stages. Two innovative cleaning devices were installed on the rivers Ialomiţa and Dâmboviţa this spring as part of the project’s pilot phase.

Known as The Litter Trap, the devices are, in fact, floating systems capable of capturing waste from the surface to 1 meter under the water. Environmentally friendly, the traps are made of plastic collected from the water and recycled, this feature making them a circular product.

Because Dorna’s goal is to inspire and form an environmentally responsible community among consumers, the initiative’s second stage included them as well, through a voting campaign for the rivers that need to be cleaned.

The second phase of the campaign was completed in November, with the installation of Log Boom devices on the rivers Argeș, Jiu, and Mureș, the rivers chosen by consumers in the voting campaign. The Log Boom cleaning system is a simplified solution adapted to the geographical and hydrological specifics (flow, width, depth, bank resistance, etc.) of these rivers, so that the devices work in optimal conditions and at maximum capacity. The cleaning system is a stable and durable barrier, installed on the surface of the water, composed of floating arms made of HDPE material that prevent waste from flowing further down the river.

“Caring for the environment and innovation are part of the Dorna brand identity. The river cleaning campaign and the Water that cares for Water initiative have brought us one step closer to a cleaner nature. But the fight for a cleaner environment requires a team effort, which is why we hope to inspire as many people as possible to join us and participate in this positive change by collecting separately, recycling, and adopting a responsible attitude toward what surrounds us.” – IULIANA NEDELCU, Marketing Director of Coca-Cola Romania.

“We are grateful to have been a part of such an ambitious and complex project, especially since our strategic direction is the implementation of environmental projects, in which we have gained experience over the last ten years. At the same time, the CSR Nest Association completes the circle of interventions for a cleaner environment with this project, which includes, in addition to the components of separate waste collection, increased forested areas, and sustainable urban development, as well as the component of maintaining cleaner water.” – SERGIU SEBEȘI, President of the CSR Nest Association.

“Plastic water pollution is already a reality. We are all aware that it has an impact on our health and lives. The Romanian National Water Administration, as the public authority in charge of managing the state’s public domain waters, has been actively involved in both the installation of PET collection systems and sanitizing actions. That’s why we said YES to Dorna’s natural mineral water initiative and the CSR Nest Association’s fight against plastic water pollution. Remember, only by working together can we keep the waters clean!” –  SORIN LUCACI, General Director National Administration „Romanian Waters”

All five cleaning systems are up and running, collecting floating waste from the rivers where they have been installed. Whether we’re talking about floating Litter Traps or floating HDPE Log Boom systems, none of these devices harm wildlife. The waste accumulated by each cleaning system will then be sent to the sorting station and finally transformed into new objects, using the recycling process.

Beyond the direct impact on the environment through packaging innovation, reuse of resources and measures to reduce pollution, Dorna’s goal is to get as many people involved as possible in this change by adopting environmentally responsible behavior and learning the principles of separate collection. The Dorna initiative is part of the vision of the sustainability platform of the Coca-Cola System, After Us – #NeverSettle.
