Brico Dépôt continues its commitment to environmental protection: 100% certified wood for its products by 2025 and the accelerated growth of the sustainable products range

Even if it has no walls, windows or roof, nature remains our home for all of us and it’s our common responsibility to take care of it. Brico Dépôt, part of the Kingfisher Group, is committed to constantly contributing to this goal, through initiatives with a positive impact on the communities where it operates and the environment, but also through the accelerated growth of the sustainable products range in its portfolio.


Romanians’ concern for environmental protection

In recent years, many consumers have become more concerned about the importance of protecting nature and adopting a more sustainable lifestyle, choosing products and solutions that can limit the negative effects on the environment.

According to a recent study developed by Brico Dépôt and iSense Solutions*, the most urgent problems identified by consumers in this area, locally, are deforestation (73%) and water pollution (46%). And when it comes to environmental protection, at least 4 out of 10 Romanians are always preoccupied with the following aspects: water consumption (43%), electricity consumption (38%), food waste (43%) and selective recycling (42%). Thus, 76% of the respondents mentioned they want to reduce water and electricity consumption, while 73% of them constantly recycle selectively.


Brico Dépôt’s commitment to sustainability

In this context, Brico Dépôt and the Kingfisher Group have set ambitious long-term sustainability goals, developing a series of strategic actions to tackle climate change and protect forests.

Kingfisher aims to become a positive forest company by 2025, so the area of planted forests would be larger than the exploited one. Also, the Group developed a partnership with Rainforest Alliance organization to protect tropical forests and is a founding member of the “Forest Allies” initiative. Currently, 79% of the products in the company’s portfolio are FSC – Forest Stewardship Council certified, ensuring that wood and paper materials derive from controlled sources. By 2025 , the percentage of certified wood products sold by the company will be 100%.

At the same time, the company is among the few retailers that have agreed to limit global warming below the 1.5 ° C threshold by 2025, according to the Paris Agreement. As a result, Kingfisher has met all its sustainability goals in advance and reduced the carbon emissions by 27% in 4 years.


Sustainable products for Brico Dépôt customers

Brico Dépôt portfolio includes sustainable solutions and products, which can help customers achieve significant savings in water or electricity. For example, Good Home bathroom and kitchen faucets range, with an innovative Kingfisher technology that allows to reduce water consumption with the help of the built-in regulator. At the same time, Magnusson hand tools range are made of a very durable material and have a lifetime warranty.

*The research was conducted on a sample of 504 respondents, from urban areas, aged between 18 and 65 years.
