At the recent Working Romania HR Conference, Radu Costan, Head of EHS and Wellbeing at BAT DBS Romania, shared valuable insights into fostering employee wellbeing and implementing effective communication strategies within organizations. With a focus on sustainability, creativity, and transparent communication, Costan delineated a comprehensive approach to nurturing a culture of wellness in the workplace.

When asked about the desires of employees in the service area, Costan underscored the burgeoning significance of sustainability. He noted, “Sustainability is increasingly present in our discussions and in the development strategies of companies.” Costan emphasized the importance of understanding and mitigating the long-term impact of present actions on future generations. In developing a wellbeing strategy, Costan advocated for a multifaceted approach encompassing financial security, health, creativity, and physical activity. He emphasized the need for flexibility in work arrangements to accommodate employees’ diverse preferences and needs.

“To develop a wellbeing strategy, practically all possible methods are good. In our organisation we have implemented a different wellbeing programme for each of the three companies in the group. When we tried to figure out what would work in our organization, we asked ourselves the question if a good financial situation influences our wellbeing or not. Clearly it does, and the financial aspect is very important for our employee’s wellbeing. Another important component is health. If we are healthy, if our family is healthy, that influences our wellbeing. Further on we focused on creativity, because this also influences people’s wellbeing. Some of our colleagues relax by being creative. The 4th direction is about disconnecting from devices and tasks and encouraging sports activities. In the office, through aerobics classes, or outside by participating in various outdoor activities. We encourage a flexible way of working, if employees want to do sports and it helps them to improve their well-being, and therefore the company’s productivity, we allow these things.”

Reflecting on the most appreciated benefits and activities by employees at BAT DBS Romania, Costan highlighted the popularity of office massages, healthy snacks, and financial education programs. These initiatives, tailored to enhance physical, mental, and financial wellbeing, resonate strongly with employees, fostering a positive work environment.

In addressing the importance of communication within organizations, Costan stressed the need for strategic alignment and committed leadership. He emphasized the role of knowledgeable communicators who can effectively disseminate information through various channels, including town halls, digital platforms, and interpersonal interactions. Costan underscored the value of creating a relaxed working environment where employees feel empowered to contribute feedback and suggestions, facilitating a collaborative approach to communication.

Furthermore, Costan emphasized the centralization of information and programs to streamline accessibility for employees. He reiterated, “The simpler and more centralized things are in one place, the easier it is for employees to access them.” Costan emphasized that robust communication plans are indispensable for the success of wellbeing initiatives, highlighting the critical role of effective communication in driving engagement and participation.

Radu Costan’s interventions underscored the importance of holistic wellbeing strategies and transparent communication practices in fostering a culture of wellness and sustainability within organizations. By prioritizing employee needs, promoting a supportive work environment, and facilitating open dialogue, companies can cultivate thriving workplaces that prioritize the health, happiness, and productivity of their workforce. Radu Costan’s insights serve as a guiding framework for HR professionals seeking to elevate employee wellbeing and organizational performance in an increasingly dynamic and competitive landscape.
