Austrian utility Verbund has put into operation roughly half of the 225MW wind farm that it’s building in the Dobrogea region, which requires a total investment of around EUR 380 million.

The company is currently operating 100MW and plans to build another125MW by year end or in early 2014.

“We will complete the second stage; the full investment will be completed, no doubt,” said Wolfgang Anzengruber, chairman of the managing board of Verbund AG.

He added the company has the option to expand the park to 280MW but it depends on the changes on the incentives scheme.

The wind farm is located in eastern Romania, near the Black Sea coast. The park is designed to generate some 540 GWh of electricity annually, enough to cover the consumption of 350,000 Romanian households.

The company has allotted around EUR 100,000 for helping the inhabitants of the Casimcea locality, according to mayor Gheorghe Tilinca. This included the equiping of a dental practice, the building of a new kindergarten and of a new park.

The Casimcea park uses 88 turbines with capacities of 2.3MW and 3MW that are supplied by Germany’s Enercon.

Verbund is the leading electricity provider in Austria and one of the largest hydropower producers in Europe. The company generates 80 percent of its electricity from hydropower, and also operates thermal and wind power plants. The company employs some 3,100 people and reported a turnover of EUR 3.2 billion in 2012.
