TV subscriber headcount in Romania reaches 6.9mln

The total number of paid TV broadcasting services in Romania saw a 5.9 percent growth to a level of 6.9 million in 2014, compared to 6.5 million at the end of 2013.

Against this backdrop, the household penetration rate of TV services in Romania has reached 92 percent, according to data from the national telecom authority ANCOM.

Most subscribers to TV broadcasting services continue to receive their TV programs via cable networks. Their number reached 4.38 million at the end of 2014, representing 6.3 percent surge compared to 2013.

Another 2.46 million subscribers receive their TV programs via DTH satellite networks, representing a 4.7 percent rise in their number compared to 2013.

Last but not least, 68,000 subscribers receive their TV programs via IP TV technology, representing a 22.1 percent rise compared to 2013.

At the end of last year, 60 percent of all subscribers in Romania lived in urban areas, and 80 percent of them were cable subscribers.

In  the rural areas, 61 percent of subscribers receive TV programs via DTH satellite networks.

The number of subscribers who receive their TV programs in digital format continued to grow last year as well, reaching 4.23 million out of a total of 6.9 million, representing a 9 percent growth compared to 2013.

Of these, 58 percent receive TV programs in digital format via DTH satellite networks, 40 percent receive them via cable technology and 2 percent via IP TV technology.
