The IT&C industry posted thin growth last year after a more boisterous 2010

The IT&C industry continued to grow in 2011 for the second year in a row, posting a 2 percent increase on 2010, according to a survey of the Institute for Computing.

“The turnover in IT&C grew by 8 percent in 2010 and 2 percent in 2011, catching up after the shrinkage in 2009 and coming back to the level of EUR 9.4 billion that the industry saw in 2008. The sold production and services posted a similar growth while total IT&C exports, which continued to grow during the entire crisis and post-crisis timeframe, surpassed EUR 4.7 billion, 55 percent higher than in 2008,” says the press release.

While the past two years steered the industry back on growth, the words “end of the crisis” should be used with caution because the end of last year and the beginning of this one were slow, said Mircea Vuici, coordinator of the study.

After a serious plunge in 2009, the software and services sector started to soar again in 2010, when it reached the value of EUR 2.4 billion, after a 10.2 percent growth. The following year it grew further by 8 percent to a value of EUR 2.59 billion.

“One can say the sector came out of the crisis two years ago, and the level reached in 2011 surpassed the level of the sector before the crisis. This is due mainly to exports that hiked by 37 percent compared to 2008, while revenues on the internal market posted 6 percent growth, and did not allow to catch up entirely after the fall in 2009,” says the pres release.

The telecom sector was still in decline in 2010-2011. The turnover in this sector declined by 7.3 percent to EUR 4.4 billion in 2010, while the following year it further decreased by 4.7 percent to EUR 4.19 billion in 2011. This reflects the dependence of telecom on the internal market where revenues from providing fixed and mobile telephony, and internet declined.
