Seven out of ten Romanians prefer to do their shopping in malls and commercial centers, with only 2 percent choosing street stores for their groceries or their clothes. By comparison, one in five Europeans prefers high-street stores.

“One of the substantial differences in Romanian consumption habits is their perception of entertainment areas so that the entertainment offer and the presence of a hypermarket/supermarket weigh more heavily in their decision to pick a shopping destination. Romainans recognize the positive changes that have occurred in shopping balls in the last few years, but investments in services and facilities are vital to maintain a high market share in this very competitive field”, according to he “How Consumers Shop” report from CBRE.

Romanians thing that street locations are more suitable for restaurants, compared to Europeans who prefer this format to other retailers, especially when it comes to fashion.

Smaller shopping malls, with less than 50 stores, are preferred by 27 percent of Romanians, similar share to the rest of Europe.

Cleanliness, price and safety are the most important factors that determine Romanians to pick a shopping mall. As far as logistics are concerned, Romanians are more willing to travel a longer period of time to reach their favorite mall. Shoppers with low income are even more willing to travel an even longer distance for the same reason.

76 percent of consumers check prices and reviews online before making a purchase decision.

“More importantly, thinking of the future, 66 percent of consumers say they will be using more often the Internet to shop, while 40 percent said they will reduce the frequency for shopping through the post or through the catalog”, the report says.
