Calin Popescu Tariceanu said on Tuesday that he will support Victor Ponta in the second round of presidential elections, claiming the socialist leader represents “an alternative to the Basescu regime”.

“We’ve also talked about recreating USL as a project that will materialize after the November 16 elections”, Tariceanu said.

Asked about the fact that his name has been thrown in the hat for the next prime-minister, Tariceanu said that at the moment the only topics on the discussion table is November 16 and winning the elections.

Former Intelligence chief Teodor Melescanu has also announced his support for the incumbent prime-minister. Victor Ponta said on Tuesday that the former presidential candidate will be offered a position as presidential counselor on matters of security.

“I’ve discussed the matter with mr. Melescanu and he will be part of my presidential team, as a counselor on matters of national security in the position currently filled by Mr. Fota, I believe”, Victor Ponta states.

Last but not least, Corneliu Vadim Tudor, representing the Romania Mare Party, said that he would never support “a foreigner” as president of Romania, so Victor Ponta represents for him “the devil he knows”.

“I will never vote for a man who is a foreigner in terms of nationality and law, a man of a different ethnicity (…) Klaus Iohannis will be president of Romania when I will become the president of Germany, which is not something in the foreseable future”, according to Vadim Tudor.

Klaus Iohannis, a close second behind Victor Ponta in Romania presidency first round vote

Victor Ponta made the effort to reach out to both Monica Macovei and Elena Udrea on Wednesday, by saying that “they had courage to enter a world that generally belongs to men”.

“They received an important number of votes, from my point of view, smaller than Tariceanu’s but still significant. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of Romanians. No, why should I say I don’t want votes from madame Udrea or from madame Macovei (..) I want to be president for all Romanians”, Ponta said.

The incumbebt prime-minister confessed he has yet to negotiate anything with his two former opponents.

“We haven’t negotiated anything so far. I don’t believe that will necessarily happen. I said only one thing: I respect them for running, for obtaining an important number of votes and I respect the 700,000-800,000 Romanians that voted for them”, Ponta claimed.

Earlier, Elena Udrea said that she hasn’t been approached by Ponta’s camp but her party will eventually release a point of view regarding the two remaining presidential candidates.
