Survey: One in ten Romanians has a smartphone but high-schoolers and students are ahead of the game

One in ten Romanians owns a smartphone, according to the res!com survey carried out by Mercury Research at the end of last year.  Thus, 12 percent of Romanians above 14 have a smartphone and 5 percent have a tablet, says the survey.

The usage of smartphones and tablets is widespread among high-schoolers and students, young people up to 35 years old, and people with higher education. However, some of these smartphone and tablet users do not connect to the internet via these devices.

This does not depend on the own financial resources. If only one in six of employed people has a smartphone, this ratio increases up to 38 percent in the case of pupils and students. Also, 14 percent of high-schoolers and students own a tablet, as compared to just 9 percent of entrepreneurs and 6 percent of employees.

High-schoolers and students are ahead of the crowd, with 8 percent of them owning both a smartphone and a tablet, which is nearly three times above the 3 percent national average.

Even though the penetration of mobile internet and smartphone and tablet sales have both surged lately, the survey reveals that 20 percent of smartphone owners and 43 percent of tablet owners do not connect to the internet from their device.

Only 12 percent of pupils and students who own a smartphone and 18 percent of tablet owners do not go online from their device.

The survey was carried out in September 2013, via face to face interviews on 1,200 respondents above 14.
