Simona Halep, at the time 3rd seeded in the WTA ranking, will climb another position on August 11th due to Na Li, currently number two, absence from the US Open. The Chinese player will not be able to defend the WTA points she won in 2013.

I wanted to let all of my great fans know that unfortunately I am going to have to withdraw from the upcoming WTA events in Montreal and Cincinnati, as well as the US Open. Since March, I have been struggling with my knee and it is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level. My medical team has advised me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee so it heels. I look forward to getting back on the court this fall in Wuhan and Beijing.“, the chinese player said on her Facebook page.

Na Li hopes to make a comeback for the tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing in September. Right now she has 6,960 points and Simona Halep is third with 6,785 points. Simona will rejoin the competition for the Cincinnati WTA Premier 5 tournament, where last year she maded all the way to the quarterfinals.

Fiven Na Li’s absence, Halep might compete in the US Open as second favourite, after current world leader is Serena Williams (9,231 WTA points).
