Simona Halep met Brazilian tennis player Teliana Pereira (WTA #88) on Tuesday in her first match at Wimbledon 2014. The Romanian player, now world number three, will move on to 2nd round after her 6-2, 6-2, victory against Pereira. The Romanian dropped four games in the whole match to seal victory in just over an hour and progress to the next stage.
Runner-up at the French Open last month and a quarter- finalist at the Australian Open in January, Halep called the victory which opened her account at this year’s Wimbledon “pretty easy”.
“It was a perfect start,” Halep said. “First round, always it’s difficult, but today I played really well. The court was beautiful, so I was enjoying every moment.”
Simona Halep will meet Polish player Leslie Tsurenko in the 2nd round match on Thursday. The two players have played against each other four times before, with three of them ending in victory for Simona.
“Tennis is different on grass but I like to play here. I want to go very far in this tournament,” Simona Halep said.
