World No. 2 Romanian star Simona Halep humbled 16th-seeded Czech left-hander Lucie Safarova 6-4, 7-5 in their match on Thursday.

“I feel good, because today was much better than first round, first match here,” said Halep, in an interview with Cincinnati.com. “I played with Lucie who is playing always very well. She’s lefty, and it’s not easy to adapt the game. I’m happy that I could win the second set also, because she was up 5‑4. You know, it’s always a great feeling when you win.”

It has been a good year for the 22-year-old Romanian, who on Monday was ranked a career-high No. 2. Asked how she was handling the new level of attention, Halep said she was enjoying it.

“It’s nice because it’s my best ranking in my career, so I have to enjoy this moment. It’s my best feeling now,” Halep said.

Simona Halep will have the opportunity of a rematch against Maria Sharapova in the Quarterfinals. The Russian player and French Open winner also advanced to quarterfinals on Thursday with a straight-sets win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Fifth-seeded Sharapova needed one hour and 58 minutes to get past her fellow Russian 6-4, 7-6 (7/2).

Currently WTA world leader, Sharapova leads Halep by just 16 points, meaning the winner of this match will be in the No. 1 spot on Monday.

“I want to play against her because I want to see if on hard [court] she will beat me again,” Halep said in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

I just want to try my game, to play very aggressive, to open the angles like always, and to stay very focused, because she’s taking a lot of time between points. So in French Open that disturbed me, but now I have experience and it will be fine.”
