Rompetrol file: Romanian senator and former Communications minister sent to jail

The Bucharest Court of Appeal sentenced senator Sorin Rosca Stanescu to two years and four months in prison for his involvement in the Rompetrol file. He was found guilty of forming a criminal group and using privileged information.

Former Communications minister Sorin Pantis was sentenced to two years and 8 months for conspiring to manipulate the stock market and constituting a criminal group.

The decision is final.

In September 2006, businessman Dinu Patriciu and accomplices Sorin Rosca Stanescu, Sorin Pantis and 9 others were prosecuted in the Rompetrol  file, for  embezzlement, money laundering  and  association for  perpetration of  criminal activity.

Also on Tuesday, final sentences were pronounced for Florin Iulian Aldea (5 years), Bucşă Alexandru (4 years + plus 2 years), Claudiu Simulescu (3 years + 1 year), Petrică Grama (2 years and 4 months). The rest of the defendants found guilty received jail time with suspension, except for Elena Albu, who was acquitted.
