Italian Romita Energie Verde plans to invest around EUR 41 million for a biomass unit with an installed capacity of 10MW in the Cluj County, making this the largest renewable capacity of this kind in Romania, and one of the largest in South-East Europe, according to a statement of the Cluj County Council.

Local authorities met earlier this week with Italian representatives of investment funds and Romita to discuss the project that will be located in the Rascruci locality, close to the Industrial Park Tetarom III.

Romita will generate electricity and thermal energy by using 100.000 tons of biomass from wood and derived materials every year.

The building works on Rascruci plant started this month and will be finalized in 18 months, creating 50 new jobs, said the statement. Romita uses co-financing from EU non-reimbursable funds – the 4.2 measure- making it the largest allocation for SMEs in Romania.

The Cluj authorities want to attract further investment in the area and told the Italian delegation there is a good biomass resource in the surroundings of Huedin city.

“As a result of our message of availability and full support towards investors, we are convinced that the members of the Italian delegation will lobby our country, aiming to attract other investors that are willing to set up a profitable business,” said Ioan Oleleu, vice-president of the Cluj County Council.

Romita will benefit from the renewable energy support scheme set up by Romania to attract green investments. Biomass is currently granted two green certificates for every megawatt generated and delivered to end consumers.

Around 35MW of biomass capacities were granted green certificates by August, according to Transelectrica, the grid operator. Another 2.5 MW were capacities that use deposit gas.
