Romania’s unemployment rate down 0.7 pct in Q2

For the second quarter of 2012 Romania has reported a 6.9 percent unemployment rate, down from 7.6 percent in the first quarter and 7.2 percent in Q2 2011, according to data released today by the National Institute of Statistics. The unemployment rate was the highest  – 21.5 percent – among young people aged between 15 and 24.

Some 693,000 Romanians aged between 15 and 64 were unemployed in the second quarter while the country’s active population was 10.05 million, according to the same source. Overall, the occupancy rate for the population aged between 15 and 64 was 60 percent, up against the previous quarter and Q2 2011 (+1.2 percent).Unemployment rate for males was 7.5 percent while the female unemployment rate was 6.1 percent. Some 8.3 percent of the active population from urban areas was jobless while in rural areas the rate was 5.2 percent.

The unemployment rate is measured according to the International Labour Organization (ILO) definition according to which an unemployed person is someone of a specified age who during the reference period was without work (not in paid employment or self employment during the reference period) currently available for work, and seeking work, (had taken specific steps in a specified recent period to seek paid employment or self-employment).
