The financial corrections incurred by Romania last year rose almost three fold to EUR 139 million, driven by irregularities found in the European Social Fund.

The report of last year’s EU budget shows Romania took the fifth biggest correction on EU funds. Spain ranked first with EUR 2.1 billion, followed by Italy and Greece with EUR 275 million and EUR 262 million, respectively.
Overall corrections incurred by EU members amounted to EUR 3.7 billion from EUR 1.1 billion in 2011.
Eugen Teodorovici, minister of EU funds, recently claimed Romania was set to lose EUR 1 billion in funding for the 2007-2013 EU budget, because of fraud allegations, mainly in public procurement tenders.
