“An ongoing battle between the prime minister and the president amid a tanking economy has left many Romanians longing for a return to communism because they think the democratic and free-market reforms of the past two decades have failed,” says the Washington Times in an opinion piece entitled Struggling Romanians yearn for communism.

The piece says that Romania has become “unpredictable” and “those who care more about safety than about freedom end up looking back nostalgically,” quoting writer Lucian Boia.

The article makes an overview of the political development in Romania, from the time when Ion Iliescu was president and the recently sentenced Adrian Nastase was prime-minister but also looks at the nearly-successful impeachment of current president Traian Basescu.

It also looks at the decline in confidence of Romanians in European institutions. “Many were enthusiastic when Romania joined the European Union in 2007, but recent EU criticism of Romania, especially over the messy impeachment referendum, has created a backlash,” says the piece, quoting the Eurobarometer poll that shows that confidence in the EU decreased sharply last year, with just 46 percent of Romanians expressing trust in the 27-nation alliance, a drop of 14 percent points from the previous year.
