Romanian telecom watchdog wants new cut in termination tariffs next year

Romanian telecom watchdog ANCOM has proposed for public consultations lower tariffs for termination rates.

Thus, starting January 1, 2014, the maximum termination rates for fixed calls will drop from 0.67 euro cents per minute to 0.15 euro cents per minute.

The maximum termination rates for mobile calls would decrease from 3.07 euro cents to 0.86 euro cents per minute.

The proposed prices were calculated taking into account the Romanian law, information from network suppliers and the best practices at the level of the European Union.

If adopted, these maximum termination rates must be implemented by the 51 providers of fixed telephony and 6 providers of mobile telephony services.

“Interconnection rates remain the key of competition in telecom. On the termination market, each operator has a natural monopoly and this is why we must regulate these rates. Market data prove that the rates set by ANCOM over the past 10 years have stimulated competition, innovation and investments on the Romanian communications market. Under the pressure of competition, average tariffs for calls have dropped 7 times, while consumption has increased exponentially,” explained Catalin Marinescu (in picture), president of ANCOM.

Romanian consumers are paying 1.9 eurocents per minute, one of the smallest rates in the European Union.
