“Ramona” short movie directed by Romanian director Andrei Cretulescu was selected for the official competition of Semaine de la Critique section for the 68th edition of Cannes International Film Festival, has received the “Canal+” award on Thursday.

Semaine de la Critique section was set up in 1962 and focuses on directors at the beginning of their careers.

The “Canal+” award is given to one of the ten short and mid-length films in competition by the Short and Creative Programmes at Canal+. They buy the rights for the winning film to screen it on TV.

“Ramona” short movie is part of Cretulescu’s trilogy started with “Bad Penny” (2013) and “Kowalski” (2014), starring the same actors, Rodica Lazăr, Dorian Boguţă, Andi Vasluianu, Şerban Pavlu, and Ana Ularu. “Ramona” is an independent short, produced by Andrei Crețulescu (Kinosseur), Radu Stancu (deFilm) and Claudiu Mitcu (We Are Basca), with co-producers Dan Chisu (DaKino) and Eugen Kelemen (Digital Cube).

Andrei Cretulescu declared for Mediafax newswire that “with Ramona, I wanted to go in the exact opposite direction – to tell a violent and complex story for 25 minutes, with non-static long takes and no dialogue. It would be an understatement to declare that it was hard to be done. Long story short, we filmed on two nights and a sunset, four days for montage, two months for graphics and sound design”.

Currently, two Romanian films were selected for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes film festival this year. Corneliu Porumboiu’s film “Comoara”( The treasure) is part of this year’s selection, starring both professional and amateur actors, and its script is signed by the director himself. Radu Muntean‘s feature – enght moie “Un etaj mai jos”(A floor below) was also selected for the same section, .presenting the inner life of a witness to a crime.
