Romanian public television management postpones making a decision on axing employees’ salaries

The managing board of the Romanian public channel has postponed talks regarding plans to axe the employees’ working hours and salaries by 20 percent, according to Dragos Bocanaciu, president of the employees’  union, quoted by Mediafax newswire.

Over 200 employees of the Romanian public television gathered in the yard of the institution yesterday to protest the decision of the management committee to cut the employees’ working time from eight to six hours, as well as their salaries.

“Talks on this matter were postponed for a future session of the managing board, since the proposal had no grounds, either from an economic perspective or from the activity viewpoint. It was just a gimmick devised by some people who are trying to save money at the expense of the employees’ salaries, because this is what the heads of TVR have known to do for the past five years, only to cut costs by cutting employees’ salaries. It is very simple to be the head of the Romanian television, the only thing you must do to balance the budget is either to fire people like Saftoiu or to cut salaries, like the current administration does. To have some vision to grow revenues or find other ways to cut costs is not possible,” said Bocanaciu.

At the start of 2013, 619 employees of TVR were made redundant.
