Romanian political leaders and officials condemned the terrorist attack that took place in Paris on Wednesday when three men caused the deaths of 12 people after attacking Charlie Hebdo’s office in the 11h arrondisement.

Charlie Hebdo is a French satirical weekly newspaper, featuring cartoons, reports, polemics, and jokes. Its headquarters was attacked on Wednesday by terrorists that appeared to be Muslim. 10 journalists and 2 police men lost their lives, while 4 other victims are in serious condition.

President Klaus Iohannis issued a statement on Wednesday wherein he voiced his compassion for the victims’ families and solidarity with the French nation.

“Attacking the offices of the French weekly magazine Charlie Hebdo is a cruel and cowardly terrorist act. I express my compassion for the families of the victims, as well as solidarity with the French nation suffering today. I assure all partners of Romania of the full support in the fight against terrorism and extremism of any kind. The international community must take a firm stand against terrorist attempts to destroy the rule of law state, violation of civil rights and freedoms,” Iohannis said.

He points out that freedom of information is a fundamental human right.

“Both religious and ethnic tolerance, and freedom of expression as well are the foundations of modern civilization, built on the principles of democracy,” according to Iohannis.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday said he is deeply shocked by the news of the gun attack on the offices of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in downtown Paris.

“I am deeply shocked by the news of the attack in Paris. Our condolences to the victims’ families and to the French people,” Victor Ponta wrote a message in French on his Twiotter page.

Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu believes the attack is one of revolting cowardice on the media and the civilised world and represents an attack on the core of democracy.

‘This act of extreme gravity against the press representatives is an attack against the very core of democracy, as well as fundamental values and liberties. We most categorically condemn this terrorist act, which is an attack of revolting cowardice on the media and the civilised world. Romania, alongside all European partners, will continue to support the fight against terrorism under all its forms of manifestation’, Aurescu said according to the ForMin website.

‘Our thoughts go to the families of the victims. We are by the side of the entire friendly French people, deeply suffering at these tragic moments’, the Romanian top diplomat said.
