Romanian Intelligence Service on edge after terrorist attack in France

The latest terrorist attacks in France reveal a new dimension of terrorist threats which might severely endanger the national security and public order in Romania, but also the credibility and the authority of state institution’s law enforcement, according to George Maior (in picture), the director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), quoted by Mediafax newswire.

Maior made this statement during the meeting of the Strategic Inter-ministerial  Group for crime prevention and eradication (GIS), and the National Committee for Special Emergency Situations (CNSSU).

Gabriel Oprea, deputy prime-minister for national security said that ensuring a public security climate requires that state structures have efficient operational mechanisms in place. They must also be highly responsible as far as the warranty for a trial in the case of the investigated people.

“Al the institutions present here, members of the two structure- the GIS and the CNSSU- have specific attributions but together, if they benefit from a well-structured normative and operational framework, they can have a firm, rapid reaction that can ensure public safety, prevent and counteract all the phenomenons that endanger the citizens’ well-being,” said Oprea during the meeting.

The agenda of the meeting which was chaired by Oprea was to analyze the situation of security measures at the level of the European Union and the areas of strategic interest in Romania, as well as how to develop the capabilities of intervening during special emergency situations.

Twelve people died and 11 were wounded on Wednesday during an attack carried out by armed individuals at the headquarters of the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The attackers were allegedly two Muslim brothers, Said Kouachi, 34, and Cherif Kouachi, 32, who had French citizenship.
