Romanian employees risk becoming the poorest in the EU

Romanian employees run the highest risk of poverty, among the employees in all EU countries, with a poverty risk rate of 17.3 percent, as stated by labor minister Mariana Campeanu.

“What is most worrying is that 20 percent of Romanians believe the job they have does not offer them perspectives to advance in their career,” said the minister.

In countries such as the Czech Republic and Finland, the poverty risk rates stand at only at 3.7 percent.

“The high risk of poverty among those who are working is continually growing. This is very worrying for Romania, because salaries are already at a very low level, opportunities for obtaining revenues from other sources are also low, and the difference between small revenues and very high revenues is growing by the day,” said Campeanu.

At the same time, Romania also recorded the lowest rates in the EU concerning the participation to continuous training among the population between 24 and 64 years of age. Furthermore, more and more Romanians leave school very early.

The minister also quoted a survey of the Labor Ministry shows that only 25.9 percent of Romanians believe they are well paid, compared to 63 percent in Denmark or 60.5 percent in Luxembourg.

“These are countries with a very good standard of living, but still, the difference is very high,” said the labor minister.

In Romania, the number of qualified employees is on the decline. “If in Romania only 74 percent of people graduated from high-school, in the other countries in the EU the graduation rate stands at 90 percent. And the fact that in Romania the employed population is no longer properly trained is still the result of the lower quality of education and training courses. I believe we should go back to the root of the problem because in Romania at this point there is a problem that we did not have: we are starting to have an increasingly poorly qualified labor force,” she said.
