Romanian Cultural Institute management resigns on drastic budget cut

The president of the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), Horia-Roman Patapievici, said the entire management will resign after the budget of the institution was axed by more than one third.

According to Mediafax newswire, the Ministry of Finances informed the Romanian Cultural Institute that a series of modifications will take place, including the fact that the budget of the institution will be reduced by RON 14.5 million, which is more than one third. The ministry asked that the institute should run on RON 28.5 million. However, the institute already has contracts under way that are worth RON 29 million by the end of this year, so this would mean the institute should run on minus RON 500,000 to comply with this request.

At the end of June, Patapievici warned he would resign if the Constitutional Court decides the government’s emergency ordinance 27/ 2012, which transfers the institution from the presidency under the senate’s authority is legal.
