Romania’s women’s team has won the first stage of the fencing World Cup stage in Doha after a 19-18 score in the final against China. The women’s epee team was made up of Ana Maria Branza, Simona Pop, Maria Udrea and Raluca Sbarcia, trained by Octavian Zidaru.
The team finished above second placed China by 12 points. Hungary took bronze while the USA finished fourth.
Romania’s team defeated Poland in the eighth finals, with 45-37, then in the quarterfinals, it won in front of Estonia, with 45-44, and in the semi-finals the team defeated the US team with 26-25, to exceed China in the finals, with 19-18, the last three victories being gained in the last minute of the competition.
In the singles event, Ana Maria Branza finished the competition of Doha on the fifth place, after having lost in the quarterfinals.
