Romanian retail trade rose by 10.3 percent in May compared to the same period last year. According to data from the European Union statistical office (Eurostat) that is the second-highest increase recorded by a European Union member after Luxembourg (16.7 pct).
Retail trade volume in the euro area rose 0.7 percent, while in the European Union (EU 28) it advanced 1.2 percent year on year.
In May 2014 compared with April 2014, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade remained stable in the euro area and fell by 0.1 percent in the EU 28, with Romania posting the second-highest increase in the EU at 1.9 percent.
The biggest month-on-month increase in the EU was registered in Portugal with 2.9 percent, followed by Romania and then Malta with 1.6 percent.
