There are some 23,000 practicing lawyers and 8,500 of them are working in Bucharest out of the 29,000 lawyers registered in Romania said Calin-Andrei Zamfirescu, honorary president of UNBR (The Romanian Bar Union), on Tuesday, during the M&A Roadshow organized by the International Bar Association (IBA) European Regional Forum.

Zamfirescu said that that foreign law firms active locally have brought management standards and shaped the career of valuable Romanian lawyers that later moved to open their own practice.

“The Romanian legal market has developed enough in recent years, it’s mature enough but it’s still a long distance from the European realities. This is why we are still one of the few markets where the local law firms dominate the market,” said Zamfirescu.

The law firms active locally have split the litigation and consulting departments in recent years and there are specialized lawyers in consulting that never went to court, said Cornel Popa, partner at Tuca Zbarcea & Asociatii.

He said the law firms are dependent on the general economic context and that international M&A activity has decreased, but “not tragically”. The partner added the Romanian M&A market has increased in recent years, contrary to the regional and international trends. It was boosted by deals closed in e-commerce, agriculture and renewable energy.

Prof. Dr. Jörg K. Menzer, senior vice-chair of the European Regional Forum/IBA, managing partner at Noerr, commented that IBA serves as a knowledge platform that helps lawyers to be more professional.
