The National Red Cross Society celebrates 138 years of history and humanitarian activity on Friday.

On july 4th 1876, the National Red Cross Society was founded through an act signed by some of the most important personalities of the moment: Dimitrie Ghica, Nicolae Kretzulescu, George Gr. Cantacuzino, C.A. Rosseti, Ion Ghica, Dimitrie Sturza, Gr.G. Cantacuzino și Dr. Carol Davila.

Over the course of its history, the Red Cross proved to be an important symbol of hope and comfort for those in need. A trust-worthy partner for society during times of uncertainty and suffering, the Red Cross regularly intervened whenever Romania dealt with war, outbreaks or disasters.

“All of our activity is based on a single element that made our organisation last for so long: voluntary work. On July 4 we celebrate the Red Cross’s volunteers first and foremost. The people that act with promptness, devotion and dedication every time they are needed to help those in suffering”, according to Mihaela Geoana, president of the Romanian Red Cross.

The event will be celebrated with special activities in all major cities of the country: raffles, theater show, first-aid demonstrations, marathons and children’s games. Like every year, the Red Croiss Volunteers will celebrate their organisation’s anniversary by offering water for hydration, measuring blood tension and sugar levels and assisting old people in their homes.
