Constanta’s mayor, Radu Mazare, currently under investigation for accepting bribery, has been released from custody on Wednesday and will be investigated at large. New details revealed by the DNA indicate that Israelian businessman Elan Schwartzenberg is involved in the case and might’ve acted as an accomplice.

Both Radu Mazare and the man who allegedly bribed him, Avraham Morgenstern, were released on Wednesday from custody. According to new details on the case, Elan Schwartzenberg is the one who introduced Morgenstern to “people able” to assure he would win the auction for the “Henri Coanda” building project. Furthermore, he’s the one who passed the money for the bribe through several accounts before surrendering it to the Mazare brothers: Radu Mazare and his brother, Alexandru (PSD senator, also looked at as a suspect).

The mayor defended himself against the allegations on Wendesday claiming the money that Elan transferred to his account were actually a debt the mayor had to cash in from “a greek”.

Asked what relationship he sustained with Elan Schwartzenberg and what is the nature of the transfer, Mazare replied:

“Elan is my friend and everybody knows that (…) I loaned a Greek and Elan took over the debt and paid me off, without letting me know. (…) My brother doesn’t know Elan, he only came to the inauguration of the building complex”.

Furthermore, Radu Mazare underlined that his relationship with Avraham Morgenstern is strictly professional and despite whatever the DNA might say, the file doesn’t contain any information from an informer and there was no bribery.

“Avraham lost EUR 300,000 on this contract. (…) You have to be crazy to lose 300,000 euro on a deal and pay a bribe”, Radu Mazare said, adding he was proud he built the “Henri Coanda” neighborhood cheaply.

The Courts decided on Wednesday that Radu Mazare and Avraham Morgenstern can be investigated while at large, however the decision is not final. Prosecutors already announced they intend to appeal the decision.
